Is this now? If you’re looking forward, you’re looking in the wrong direction. The official synopsis for Westworld’s latest episode, The Riddle of the Sphinx, promises plenty more mind-boggling twists and turns which we’ve become accustomed to trying to piece together the multiple timelines, memories and events of the series. There will be minor spoilers from the previous three episodes ahead so for all intents and purposes; be warned.
Following on from the cliff-hanger discovery and subsequent attack on Maeve’s group at the end of Virtù e Fortuna, it would appear the show runners want to keep the suspense from the encounter high for another week as we’ll see no action from her entourage – or in fact Dolores’ posse either – leaving the limelight squarely at the feet of some of the show’s less explored characters; namely the Delos family, their prominent security officers and everyone’s favourite malfunctioning android, Bernard, who found himself being dragged away by a seemingly independent, yet zombie-like, Clementine.
The episode promises to explore Grace’s significance – who we met last episode in the colonial Indian park before finding herself presumably captured by Ghost nation hosts. With so many of the major players absent from the episode, this seems the perfect opportunity to tie up loose ends and provide some background on the increasingly complex universe of Westworld and with a large a portion of screen time going to Daddy Delos, James, and his son in law, William, it seems that’s exactly what we’re getting.
