Whites v Blacks: How Football Changed a Nation

Part of the “Black and British” season, this is the story of one of English football’s more disturbing moments.

On 16th May 1979, a football match that was part of Len Cantello’s testimonial at West Bromwich Albion took place. It was a match between a team consisting of only white players and another of only black players. This “Whites v Blacks” match was a big deal for the black team, who were at the time facing a huge amount of hostility on and off the pitch.

In this programme West Brom fan Adrian Chiles looks at the history of the game and interviews some of the players such as Ally Robertson and Tony “Bomber” Brown, and more recent players such as Ian Wright and Dion Dublin about race relations in the sport today.

Whites v Blacks: How Football Changed a Nation is on BBC Two on Sunday 27th November at 21.00.
