While tonight’s match should make for thrilling viewing, it appears to be what’s happening off the pitch which is attracting most attention.
All the talk before the match has started has been about whether or not FIFA will allow the England and Scotland teams to wear poppies on the pitch. Whether or not you yourself wear the poppy, surely the players should be at least be allowed the choice of honouring the fall on this of all days.
In terms of tonight’s game, this is the first match aside from friendlies played between the two teams since November 1999. Back then a two-legged match first saw England beat Scotland by two goals to nil at Hampden Park, which mean that Scotland’s 1-0 victory at Wembley a few days later wasn’t good enough. It was also their last victory against the “Auld Enemy”.
World Cup Qualifier: England v Scotland is on ITV at 19.15 (kick-off at 19.45).
