Following 2011’s hugely successful reboot, Fox’s new-look X-Men franchise takes us to the distant future and back in the darkest moments of our heroes’ pasts. Many of the original cast reprise their roles with the likes of James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult all returning as the eponymous team of mutants. Hugh Jackman heads a cast of returning X-Men characters including Patrick Stewart and Ian McEllen – who play the future versions of McAvoy and Fassbender’s characters respectively – amongst a host of others.
The film opens to a bleak future where robotic titans known as The Sentinels have hunted and killed the majority of the world’s population. Realising that this world is doomed after the sentinels attack the X-Men’s mountain stronghold, Charles Xavier sends Logan – AKA Wolverine – back through time to prevent the sentinels from ever being created. Now back in the 1960s, Logan sets about to find and reunite a fracture X-Men team in the hopes of stopping the global catastrophe that awaits them. But with Charles Xavier’s past self riddled with misanthropic depression and reluctant to use his powers ever again, will Logan be able to make him see the light and change the course of history?
X-Men: Days of Future Past – Wednesday 9:00pm on Film 4.
