Critically acclaimed historical dark comedy starring an Oscar-winning Olivia Colman as eccentric 18th-century monarch Queen Anne. With Britain in the midst of a lengthy war with France, the ailing, depressed Queen spends her time playing with her pet rabbits and avoiding her reginal duties in any and every way possible. She leaves most of the thinking down to her close friend, lover and confidante Lady Sarah (a BAFTA-winning Rachel Weisz), who uses her influence over Anne to govern the country and the war effort in the way that she sees fit. But her control over the Queen diminishes when her own cousin, Abigail (Emma Stone), arrives at the Queen’s court, looking for work. Abigail soon develops a fast friendship with Anne, who appreciates her softer nature in comparison to Sarah’s tough love. As the two ladies vie for the Queen’s affections – resorting to ever-more questionable methods in doing so – it becomes apparent that there’s only space for one favourite.
