The Last Tree

The Last Tree

Writer-director Shola Amoo’s semi-autobiographical coming-of-age drama follows a young boy’s journey from idyllic countryside in Lincolnshire to high-rise flats in London. Femi (Tai Golding/Sam Adewunmi) enjoys a happy childhood with a doting foster mother (Denise Black), until his life is uprooted when he is returned to his birth mother (Gbemisola Ikumelo). Femi struggles to navigate his new environment and its different culture and values, not to mention the different methods of discipline. As he approaches adulthood in the early 2000s, Femi attempts to balance his studies with his street life while he grapples with his identity as a young Black man. Can Femi break down the barriers he has built up? And if so, is he prepared to tackle society’s?
