Film of the day: The Orphanage

The Orphanage

Critically acclaimed supernatural horror from director JA Bayona, co-produced by Guillermo del Toro.

Laura (Belén Rueda) endured a difficult early upbringing at a gothic orphanage, before being adopted. As an adult, Laura is keen to turn her early years into something positive, and returns to the now closed orphanage with her husband Carlos (Fernando Cayo) and young son Simón (Roger Príncep) to reopen it as a facility for disabled children.

But it soon becomes apparent that the building is harbouring some horrifying secrets when Simón starts talking about a new friend he’s made, a child wearing a crude sack mask. The problem is, the orphanage has yet to be reopened, and there are no other children there. Laura sets out to investigate her son’s claims, discovering that the facility has a chilling past that might just spell disaster for the young family.

In Spanish with English subtitles.
