The Simpler Life

In this brand-new show, 24 ordinary Brits leave behind their jobs and their homes, for an extraordinary summer cut off from the modern world on a remote farmstead in Devon. Together, they live by the principles of a community which rejects modern values and technology – the Amish – eating what they sow and harvest themselves and going to sleep by candlelight when the sun goes down. Over six months, they are tracked by scientists, who measure the physical and mental changes that result from stepping out of the stresses and complexity of modern life – living simply, communally and frugally without phones, the 24-hour news cycle or social media. In this episode, former footballers’ PA Penny continues to find Amish frugality extremely testing and to make matters more trying, the workload has increased for everyone. With numbers dwindling, there’s increased pressure on the volunteers who remain. Not only do they have a farm to run, they also have a barn to build. Special needs teacher Hazel has one thing on the brain that she feels could change her mood and improve her quality of life dramatically but it’s not very Amish – she’s desperate for the occasional beer. The volunteers argue over whether this is a reasonable use of their very limited community fund and a subsequent proposal to split the fund into individual pots leaves the community more divided than before. It’s down to Wigan boy Kevin to rise to the occasion and in a rousing speech, he brings everyone together… or almost everyone
