Benidorm Review: Costa Del ITV

BENIDORM: Friday 25th February, ITV1, 9pm

Gold necklace of your name? Check. England Top? Check. Bad attitude with just a bit of campness? Check! All aboard the 9pm flight to big laughs on a Friday evening with the return of the much loved sitcom set in everyone’s favorite holiday destination.

The award winning series checks back into The Solana resort for the first time since Christmas for a fourth season tonight. This episode kicks off with the Garvey family arriving to stay at Madge’s luxury villa, only to discover that she’s sold it to Cilla Black and legged it because of her debt. Surprise, surprise, the next minute they’re checking back into the good old faithful Solana resort. Meanwhile, hotel regular Gavin arrives on the scene with new bitching buddy Keith, who delights in scoffing his own body weight at the all you can eat buffet. Also, hotel assistant and resident casanova Mateo struggles to get used to his new cross dressing colleague Leslie (played by Tim Healey) at the pool bar. There’s even an appearance from Scary Mary, played by Loose Women‘s Denise Welch.

All in all it feels like Benidorm never really left our screens, and with more than a few laugh out loud moments in this episode we should be in for another cracking series, which will sadly be writer Derren Litten’s last offering. Quirky, fast paced and a close to the bone at times, this opener will warm the hearts of old fans whilst no doubt entertaining and gaining new ones. Johnny Vegas may be gone, but the laughter is still very much there.
