This week Josh Widdicombe and The Sky at Night’s Maggie Aderin-Pocock join the regulars for some fun and games – which are reportedly edited for our benefit.
With Josh playing alongside Sam Pamphilon (and complaining about having to be with another disabled person as Sam’s colour blind) and Maggie with Steve McNeil, the first game introduced by Dara and Ellie Gibson is eighties classic Defender. This is followed by Maggie’s choice, a point-and-click adventure space game she plays with her children called Love You to Bits, but Josh’s game is the highlight of the episode: Football Manager 2017.
This is mainly because that due to the way the game is played, he and Steve did not actually “play” the game, but just set it to go and watched it progress. The game was so long that Dara says to the viewers at home that the footage we saw was heavily edited down in comparison to the marathon they witnessed. After this was a virtual reality version of another 80s classic, Battlezone; and finally an enlarged version of Chicken Jump, a game where you have to jump over oncoming traffic.
While this episode did not feel as good as last week’s (mind you, the humour last time around was more accidental), there was still plenty to enjoy. The problem was the stuff to enjoy was stuff we at home didn’t experience. One of main gags was how long Football Manager took, which is hard to comment on given that we just got the highlights. Also, Josh talked about how much he loved playing in virtual reality when talking about Battlezone but it is something that probably most people have not experienced.
But still, there were laughs to be had in this episode and it does feel as if time flies by when watching it.
Dara O Briain’s Go 8 Bit is on Dave at 22.00.
