While this DVD may be of a cartoon with a PG rating, don’t let it fool you into thinking this is a kids show. Regular Show is in fact a show for adults, using surreal humour and strange characters to make for a funny series.
The series, which debuted in 2010, follows Mordecai the blue jay (J. G. Quintel, the creator of the series) and Rigby the raccoon (William Salyers), a pair of 23-year-olds who work as park groundkeepers. Well, “work” is not the exact word to use because Mordecai and Rigby are total slackers who will do anything and everything to avoid having to do any work. This results in utter frustration for their boss, a living gumball machine called Benson (Sam Marin), often strange delight of their other boss Pops (also Marin), a guy with a lollipop for a head, and frequently to the annoyance of fellow co-worker Skips the yeti (Mark Hamill from Star Wars).
Each episode sees Mordecai and Rigby’s attempts in avoiding work resulting in disastrous, surreal consequences. In this series, the duo accidentally release a pixelated demon from an arcade video game; Rigby eats so many unhealthy snacks his body rejects him, leaving Rigby an ectoplasmic mess; Mordecai’s attempts to buy concert tickets for the robin he loves, Margaret (Janie Haddad-Tompkins), resulting in him having a gigantic coffee binge; and a prank call causes the pair to travel back in time to the 1980s.
If you are fan of surreal comedy, this is a series to invest in. The bizarre situations created by Quintel are genuinely laugh-out-loud funny. One of Quintel’s influences is British comedy. An interview with him revealed that as a student he was introduced to shows such as The League of Gentlemen, The IT Crowd and The Mighty Boosh amongst others. It is not just the plots that are good, but also the talent. As mentioned, this series stars Luke Skywalker himself, but then there are other famous members of the crew. The composer for the series is Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo.
If there is a problem it is the length of the series. This collection of 11 episodes is only two hours long. Fortunately, later series had more episodes.
