Taskmaster returns to Dave with a bang – both metaphorically as it was announced last week that it was to be adapted for American TV with Reggie Watts as the host, and literally as we witnessed a cake being blown up with fireworks.
The British master of the tasks, Greg Davies, and his assistant, Alex Horne (who will star in the US version as well), this time are coming up with tasks for Hugh Dennis, Joe Lycett, Lolly Adefope, ex-Bake Off presenter Mel Giedroyc and future Bake Off presenter Noel Fielding. After the formality of the prize task, which was to get the most interesting autograph on the most interesting vegetable, we got cracking with the first task proper: to destroy a cake in the most beautiful way. This ranged from slow-motion firework displays from Lycett, to Fielding putting the cake in the washing machine.
Also in the show we witnessed Dennis using a mirror to draw a woman (very badly) who was hidden behind a curtain, Adefope using a water hose to fell rubber ducks from a fence, and Giedroyc extracting lime juice using a shoe.
After watching this first episode, it was hard to see any clear favourites to win at this early stage. Here, four different people came top out of the five tasks that featured, and those who performed badly early on managed to make impressive comebacks. The most impressive performance tonight was of Dennis managing to use simple string to knock down rubber ducks in under nine seconds.
So far, so good.
Taskmaster is on Dave on Tuesdays at 21.00.
