Unbroken

Angelina Jolie’s second outing as a director is a fact-based wartime drama, written by the Coen brothers and starring Jack O’Connell and Domhnall Gleeson. Louis Zamperini (O’Connell) is a troubled youngster who develops into a star athlete and competes in the 1936 Olympic Games for the USA. When war breaks out, he enlists with the US Air Force. But, in 1943, the B-29 Superfortress bomber that he’s flying on crashes into the Pacific. Adrift in the ocean, he and other crew members survive on fish, birds and rainwater for over a month before they’re found by the Japanese and taken to prisoner of war camps. Suffering the camp’s horrific conditions and the brutality of the guards and commanding officers, Louis must rely on all his physical and mental strength, as well as memories of his shining athletic successes, to survive.
