The group stage reaches its conclusion in Le Havre with the heavyweight meeting between Sweden and USA.
One thing has been apparent from the group stage games so far is that the US and Sweden are light years ahead in terms of their play and physical conditioning – not that we’re handing out trophies and medals, right now.
This promises to be a fascinating game between two teams that are very assured technically and who play with a physical intensity that few teams have come close to matching. Both are prolific in front of goal and there is the added bonus of there being a score to settle; Sweden memorably knocked USA out of the 2016 Olympics.
There is a chance that this could be a cagey tactical affair – after all, given their form, these two must be expected to meet again in the latter stages or even the final. That said, it is not really in the DNA of either team to sit back and play with caution.
