The trailer for Darren Aronofsky’s latest film, Black Swan, has debuted online. The film stars Mila Kunis (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, That ‘70s Show), Natalie Portman (Star Wars, V for Vendetta) and Vincent Cassel (Mesrine, Eastern Promises).
Black Swan follows ballet dancer Nina (Portman), who is consumed with dance and lives with her retired ballerina mother Erica (Barbara Hershey). When artistic director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to recast the prima ballerina for the production of Swan Lake, Nina is his first choice. However, new dancer on the scene Lily (Kunis) impresses Leroy and Nina must compete against her for the coveted role.
The role requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan (a picture of innocence and grace) and the Black Swan (who is more sensual). Nina is ideal to play the White Swan role, while Lily is perfect for the Black Swan. The rivalry between Nina and Lily transforms into a warped friendship which sees Nina dangerously embrace her dark side.
No UK release date has been announced, but it is scheduled to open in the US on December 1st (just in time for awards season). The trailer suggests Aronofsky has departed from the grittier style of The Wrestler and returned to the highly stylized and visual tone of Requiem for a Dream.
