In pretty much every film Channing Tatum takes his shirt off and punches someone. While 21 Jump Street showed that there was more to him than a right hook, he’s still happy to flex his pecs, as he will be doing in Magic Mike, where he’ll play a stripper.
But wait, there’s more to the film than Tatum’s bronzed torso. It’ll star Alex Pettyfer as a wannabe stripper called The Kid who gets taken under the wing of veteran favourite “Magic” Mike Martigano. Mike introduces him to his stripper posse which includes Tito (Adam Rodriguez), Ken (Matt Bomer) and Big Richie (Joe Manganiello), managed by Dallas stripper-turned-owner Dallas (Matthe McConaughey).
But Mike has an unexpected talent for making bespoke furniture and knows that his time taking clothes off for money is limited, and is encouraged to take that talent further by Pettyfer’s sister Paige (Cody Horn).
It’ll be his second collaboration with Steven Soderbergh after Haywire, so it’s virtually guaranteed to have a slick sheen. Interesting it was borne of a conversation he had on set with Soderbergh, when he mentioned his past history as a stripper in Florida. Not one to let an opportunity slip by, Soderbergh requested a script which was promptly delivered by Reid Carolin.
Magic Mike will do it’s thang on July 13.
