A remake of the 1976 film inspired by the story of The Supremes, Sparkle centres on three singing teenage sisters from Harlem who form a girl group in the late 1950s. This remake moves it forward to 1960s Detroit during the Motown era.
While it looks like a fairly familiar story – balancing the pressures of fame and romance, the big draw here will be the last on-screen appearance of the late great Whitney Houston, who finished filming three months before her untimely death. Houston will play the mother of the girls – American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter. Expect some big belting songs and I would wager, fairly sentimental drama.
It’s out on October 5th.
