The first teaser trailer for the forthcoming Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady has hit the interwebs. Debuting on BBC Breakfast News, the trailer offers the first clips of Meryl Streep as the titular character and it’s absolutely bloody hilarious.
It’s directed by Phyllida Lloyd who also directed Streep in 2008’s Abba musical atrocity Mamma Mia! The supporting cast includes a wealth of British talent including Jim Broadbent as Denis Thatcher, Richard E Grant, Olivia Colman, Nicholas Farrell, Susan Brown, Roger Allam, Anthony Head and John Sessions.
The film will tell the story of Thatcher’s rise to power in a male dominated world and will supposedly be “a surprising and intimate portrait of an extraordinary and complex woman”.
Yeah, ok. Well, firstly Meryl Streep looks like she’s about to play Thatcher in panto where these massively overdone teeth. And there’s that awful lighting behind her at the end, which looks like she’s opening a musical. Actually, “Thatcher: The Musical” is something we would like to see. Get on it Hollywood.
