Film of the day: Pete’s Dragon

John Kassir and Oakes Fegley in Pete's Dragon (2016)

For anyone who sat through the woeful 1977 Pete’s Dragon as a child, you are forgiven for viewing this title with trepidation. However, Disney’s live-action reworking of the tale is a surprisingly good piece of family entertainment.

Thankfully the songs from the original are gone and in their place is a half-decent story and some 21st century CGI in the shape of Elliot, a dragon who befriends Pete (Oakes Fegley), a young boy orphaned by a car crash and left alone in a forest.

It starts off pretty bleak but it builds into a satisfying fantasy adventure. Also stars with Bryce Dallas Howard, Robert Redford and John Kassir as the dragon.

Pete’s Dragon Friday 7.00pm on Sky Cinema Premiere.
