Tom Hardy stars as Bob, a low-level criminal who works behind the bar in a grubby bar that is used to launder money for Chechen gangsters. Managing the place is the snake-like cousin Marv (James Gandolfini in one of his final roles) who fills the screen with saccharine charm and small talk that masks the films central double-cross.
Directed by Michaël R Roskam, this is a squalid and dirty feature that doesn’t try to glamourise the gangster theme. Rather choosing to explore the personal and social incompetencies of Bob alongside his prodigious talent for violence and unspoken past history with Marv.
James Ortiz plays the local detective who knows that something is going on but is powerless to take action.
