Film Preview – Thor: Ragnarok

thor ragnarok

The critically acclaimed third Thor title under the Marvel cinematic universe raises the standard of comic book movies with its all star cast, incredible visual effects and hilariously comedic tone which makes its over-the-top nature seem almost parodical of the gristly, stoney-faced superhero’s we’ve become acclimatised to over the past generation of films – something which isn’t necessarily a bad things given both its success commercially and its entertainment value. The cast features some huge Hollywood names including Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Cate Blanchett, to name but a few, and is complimented by the masterful vision of director Taika Waititi.

The film sets its tone early on with Thor’s battle with Surtur – a fiery titan in traditional norse mythology who is prophesised as eventually being responsible for Ragnarok (ie. the end of the world) – with the titular demi-god’s wiity quips at his adversary becoming a common theme as the character is made far more human than he is seen to be in his previous outings. The crux of the film comes when Thor’s banished sister – Hela (Blanchett) – returns from exile to take control of Asgard following their father’s death, stranding her brother on an alien planet half way across the universe in order to do so unopposed. Thor and his half brother Loki must then find a way back to Asgard to liberate the realm from their sister’s tyranny and prevent Ragnarok once and for all.
