This series on the Yesterday channel has been looking at the lives of different pairs of sisters in history. In tonight’s episode, we look at two sisters who were poles apart in terms of their politics: Jessica and Diana Mitford.
The Mitford sisters (of whom there were seven in total including novelist Nancy) were the height of British socialites, but two of them took very different directions. On the one hand was Jessica, who became involved in left-wing politics; ran award with a cousin who was a veteran of the Spanish Civil War, and became an investigative journalist at the height of the civil rights movement in the USA.
Diana Mitford meanwhile went completely the other way: her second husband was Oswald Mosley, leader of the British Union of Fascists, and they invited Adolf Hitler to their wedding. It’s safe to say that Jessica and Diana didn’t get on.
A Tale of Two Sisters is on Yesterday at 20.00.
