This six-part documentary series examines the history of Britain’s various waterways.
Presenter and anthropologist Mary-Ann Ochota begins by travelling along the Thames via barge. Today there are around 30 barges still in use, although most are used for pleasure, but in the past they were a key part in the commercial live of London.
Ochota also looks at some of the more heroic roles these barges have played, including their role in helping the evacuation of Dunkirk.
Britain Afloat is on BBC Two at 20.00.
