If you go into the Russian Arctic, you might be surprised to learn the importance of the garage. Here in the cold north, ice fishing, matryoshkas and vodka play second fiddle to the garage, and rows of tin sheds, inhospitable from the outside but for cars, are the refuge of the Russian man.
A few square metres to escape the pressure of life and retreat into your own space, this is where illegal fish shops operate, where saints and icons are carved, booze is distilled and where quails are bred.
In this film, the ‘Garage People’ speak for themselves, and with each other, sharing their concerns, fears and joys and providing an insight into a secret subculture of everyday Russians.
