Following the 2004 smash-hit, Ron Pearlman’s eponymous demon prince returns for a second outing in 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army alongside returning characters Liz Sherman (Selma Blair) – the character’s pyro-kinetic girlfriend who is revealed to be pregnant with his children – and Abe Sapien (Doug Jones), the aquatic telepath. Guillermo Del Torro retains his directorial leadership over the 2008 sequel, while veteran actors John Hurt and Jeffrey Tambor both reprise small roles within the film.
A few years after the events of the first film, Hellboy remains a CIA asset operating out of the media spotlight alongside Abe and Liz at the Bureau. However, with the arrival and warnings of Dr. Johann Kraus (voiced by Seth McFarlane), it becomes clear that dark forces once again threaten the human world and the titular hero is forced out of hiding and into an conflict in underworld politics. Our heroes soon discover that the elf prince Nuada (Luke Goss) and his sister Nuala (Anna Walton) plan to awaken an ancient mechanical army to lead fantasy creatures out of humanity’s shadow and into a conquest of the over world. But with Liz pregnant with his children, how far will Hellboy be willing to go and what will he sacrifice to prevent humanity’s annihilation?
