Thirteen years since first encountering one of America’s most notorious hate groups, one of TV’s greatest documentarians Louis Theroux makes a return to Kansas to spend time with the WestBoro Baptist Church for a third time – a hugely controversial Christian ministry that for years has picketed at military funerals and other high-profile events with deliberately provocative and homophobic placards.
A lot has changed since Louis’s last visit in 2011. Since then the church’s patriarch, Pastor Phelps has died in 2014 and more and more members seem to be leaving the group. Most prominently the pastor’s granddaughter Megan whom we see in the first two documentaries. Despite this and despite controversy the ministry still attracts new members to join the community.
Having watched the two documentaries about the Westboro Baptist Church back to back it is interesting to see the development of its members. With some members clearly showing a stronger and deeper conviction for their cause whilst others seems to show signs of doubt. This new documentary would be another interesting addition to the phenomenon that is the Westboro Baptist Church and its members.
Louis Theroux – Surviving America’s Most Hated Family is on BBC Two at 9.00 pm
