I must confess that before writing this, all I knew of Sidney Nolan was that he was once said as an exclamation in a Monty Python sketch (said by a Aussie philosopher named Bruce).

Sir Sidney was one of Australia’s most pioneering modern artists, most famous for his depictions of the outlaw Ned Kelly. Archive footage looks at how this working class man became accepted by London intellectuals, and even became an earlier adopter of digital manipulation.

Nolan: Australia’s Maverick Artist is on BBC Four at 21.00.
