Tonight BBC Four is devoting itself to British animation, with this documentary looking at over 100 years of work.
It seems the main secret is ingenuity: not having the same budgets as the Americans, they were forced to experiment in different ways. From cut-and-paste works dating back to the Victorians, to the claymation of Aardman, we explore how the Brit have animated in their own way.
Before this programme is an airing of the Wallace and Gromit short A Matter of Loaf and Death, and afterwards is a showcase of 13 different cartoon shorts by upcoming British talent.
Secrets of British Animation is on BBC Four at 21.00.
