In one of the biggest tragedies in the history of Formula 1, legendary Brazilian racer, Ayrton Senna, died in a fatal collision during the 1994 San Marino grand-prix. Directed by Asif Kapadia, the film portrays Senna’s introduction into Formula 1 and the increasingly complex dynamics and tumult that characterized Senna’s years as world champion through the use of behind-the-scenes footage and testimonials from those closest to the racing-star.
Senna tells the story of Ayrton Senna’s illustrious career – from his time with Toleman and Lotus to his days working with McLaren and finally Williams – as well as his tense rivalry with his French team-mate Alain Prost. The film tells the tragic tale of an icon of Formula 1 and his mission to push for more safety measure in it – something which would ultimately cause his and Roland Ratzenberger’s deaths while he defended a lead in the 1994 San Marino grand-prix.
