A journey through Japan’s mountain forests with Dr James Fox, we explore the Zen gardens and centuries-old bonsai in order to learn about the connection between Japanese culture and its natural environment.

Travelling around Japan’s stunning island geography, Fox evaluates how the country’s two great religions, Shinto and Buddhism, helped shape a creative response to nature, very different to the West.

Fox considers also the way in which modern Japan’s relationship with the natural world is changing, and travels to Naoshima Art Island to see how today’s artists are engaging with nature.
