Part of Storyville and BBC Four’s season of programmes marking 30 years of the World Wide Web, this disturbing documentary looks at the world of online moderation.
In Manila, the Philippines, there is a team of moderators, aka “cleaners”, filtering out thousands of dangerous online material being posted on websites like Google, Facebook and Twitter. This material includes child pornography, terrorist videos, footage of self-harm and propaganda.
We follow the cleaners as they try to remove this material, and see what kind of effect having to look at such content has on them. There is also the debate about the battle between moderation and censorship.
The Internet’s Dirtiest Secrets: The Cleaners is on BBC Four at 21.00.
