The Best Little Prison in Britain

Think of all those lags doing hard time, up against fellow villains and brutish screws in movies like The Shawshank Redemption, Cool Hand Luke and Brawl in Cell Block 99 … well, this isn’t anything like that.

The Best Little Prison in Britain is an intimate portrait of the pocket-sized  Isle of Man jail, affectionately known by locals and residents as the Jurby Hilton.

The Isle of Man, with a population of 85,000 is a proud self-governing island with its own legal system and prison regime. The prison has some of the lowest reoffending rates in Europe – purportedly due to its progressive penal policies – but equally that could be down to the stiff sentencing compared to those on the mainland.

Because of the island’s small population many of the prisoners and the staff already know each other, and men, women and youths are banged up together. This series paints a picture of how generations of the same family, serve sentences next door to each other.

It’s a pretty unique place and focuses on the eyebrow raising stories of how some of the inmates came to book their rooms in Jurby, such as Carl who got nicked “for robbing four pork pies and two Rice Krispie bars” and another who is inside for hitting his mum on the head with a rolled up copy of Hello magazine. Sleep soundly citizens, the streets of the Isle of Man are safer tonight

The Best Little Prison in Britain – Wednesday at 8.00pm
