Dr James Fox continues his journey through Japan discovering how three influential cities have shaped the countries past and inspire its future.
Tonight Fox is in Kyoto discovering how great Japanese treasures, including The Tale of Genji, were produced. In Edo, now Tokyo, a very different art form emerged – wood block prints of artists such as Hokusai and Hiroshige. James meets artists that are still practising this form today.
James also tackles Japan’s urbanisation and meets street photographer Daido Moriyama and Isao Takahata whose anime film Grave of the Fireflies helped establish anime as a powerful and serious art form.
